Abstract

The Mapag Sri tradition is one of the cultural heritages of the agrarian community in Cirebon Regency, performed prior to the rice harvest season as an expression of gratitude to God Almighty. This tradition originated from the interaction between Hindu-Javanese culture and later underwent acculturation with Islamic teachings without eliminating the local values deeply rooted in the community. This study aims to understand the definition of Mapag Sri and to analyze the cultural forms embedded within it. The method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review and interviews with informants who understand the history and practices of Mapag Sri. The findings indicate that this tradition encompasses three forms of culture: ideas related to divine values, togetherness, and safety; activities such as the sinoman procession, communal prayers, and wayang performances; and artifacts including offerings (sesajen), penganten pari (symbolic rice bride and groom), bale panjang, and traditional attire. One informant stated that Mapag Sri is “a thanksgiving to Allah SWT for the blessings of the harvest while also serving as a means to strengthen community unity.” Therefore, Mapag Sri functions not only as a customary ritual but also as a medium for integrating religious, social, and historical values within the agrarian life of the Cirebon community.
